The Germ Theory
Although there are a few other scientists that contributed to the Germ Theory, Pasteur had more formal experiments on the relationships between germs and disease in the years of 1860-1864.
Pasteur had begun his teachings as a professor at the University of Lille. The town of Lille was experiencing problems with their alcohol. Pasteur then took it upon himself to experiment with the alcohol, and come up with a reason why it is causing so many people to become ill. He began by studying alcoholic fermentation. Fermentation is the foaming that occurs during the manufacturing of wine and beer. Pasteur used this term to describe the changes brought about by microorganisms and the yeast growing in the air. Pasteur began studying lactic acid and butyric acid.
The Germ Theory in it of itself is the theory that certain diseases are caused by the invasion of the body by microorganisms. Pasteur showed that fermentation and purification are caused by organisms in the air.
