This article displays primary sources from Louis Pasteur himself. The article starts off with an introductory on
Louis Pasteur and how he came to be a scientist. I briefly used some of this information while writing up the
home page as well as the background info page. This site was very helpful because after some skimming, the
article provided first hand information from Louis Pasteur himself instead of a historian providing the
information that they know. Having first hand accounts on a person is helpful because the researcher knows
that the information is one hundred percent accurate.
Secondary Sources:
Appleton, Nancy. "Why Louis Pasteur's Germ Theory Is A Curse." Nancy Appleton. http://www.whale.to/w/appleton1.html (accessed 18 January 2013).
This source was an interesting website that was helpful in completing this project. Nancy Appleton is a
doctor, and has a strong opinion of Louis Pasteur and his Germ Theory. She believes that the Germ Theory is
just a curse and its false information. Reading her article gave me a better understanding of the Germ
Theory and how people could portray it as being false information. Being able to view different point of
views on a subject is helpful because the researcher can build on their own views and come to better a
conclusion. I did not use any of the information directly into my website, I used Nancy's information to build
a better understanding of the Germ Theory.
Russel, I.K. "Louis Pasteur- His Contribution to Science." ACS Publications. Published January 1923.http://pubs.acs.org/doi/abs/10.1021/ie50157a058. (accessed 14 January 2013).
This article was an excerpt from a book on Industrial and Engineering Chemistry. The author, I.K. Russel,
writes a section on Louis Pasteur and his contributions to science. Russel had a lot of positive remarks
about Louis Pasteur, nothing negative. That shows that there is bias in this article, and the bias is that the
author was a big supporter of Pasteur and his views at a scientific aspect. Knowing that the author liked
Pasteur, that warns the reader that although Pasteur had done so many positive things in his lifetime, not
everyone is perfect. There had to have been some false accusation or situation that Pasteur got himself
into. By reading this article only displayed the positive things he did which was helpful in the project
overall, but made me want to find more dirty details on Pasteur to see if he really is perfect.
Weisstein, Eric W. "Pasteur, Louis (1822-1895)". Science World. http://scienceworld.wolfram.com/biography/Pasteur.html
(accessed 15 January 2013)
This online article was a brief biography of Louis Pasteur. The article provided information of Pasteur's
dedication to his work, and his medical milestone (The Germ Theory). The article described Pasteur's
process and techniques when he invented the method of pasteurization. The article helped with the
Medical Milestone page of the website, as well as the past beliefs page. Eric Weisstein has obtained a solid
amount of information about Pasteur. He kept the article brief, but provided enough information for the
reader to know exactly what Pasteur was all about.
Book Source:
Kruif, Paul de. Microbe Hunters. New Jersey: Harcourt, Brace & World, Inc. 1932.
This source was a book that was given during class. There was a chapter of 50 pages on Louis Pasteur and his
discoveries as a scientist. The beginning of the chapter covered briefly what Pasteur's life had been like
prior to his milestone on the discovery of microbiology. The rest of the chapter covered the timeline of
Pasteurs accomplishments and family life. I used part of this chapter in writing up what Pasteur's past beliefs
had been and I took a couple of quotes from the chapter and placed them throughout the website. I used a
quote by Louis himself. He wrote a letter to Marie before they got married, saying that she basically should
marry him and that quote fit in well with the background information I provided on Pasteur. This book not only
talked about Pasteur and his life, it talked about many other Microbe Hunters as well. Each chapter
introduced a new scientist and their contributions to the world of microbiology. Paul de Kruif, the author, was
a microbiologist himself, making him known as a scholar. Therefore, this source is known to be a scholarly
source.
